T20 World Cup winners India will face Sri Lanka in a three-match T20I series. The bilateral series is set to start on July 27, and all three matches are scheduled to take place at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja have announced their retirement from T20Is after helping India win the T20 World Cup title last month in Barbados, and star pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who won the Player of the Tournament award in the T20 World Cup 2024, is all set to be rested for the upcoming white-ball tour of Sri Lanka.
The BCCI selectors are set to announce India’s squad on Wednesday (July 17), and it has been reported that former world No. 1 T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav is leading the race to become India’s new T20I captain.
Ahead of the team announcement for the upcoming shortest format series, here’s a look at India’s likely squad for the T20I series against Sri Lanka.
Captain: If reports are to be believed, then star middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav will lead India in the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka. The 33-year-old is India’s third-leading run scorer in T20Is and has won five out of seven T20Is played so far as captain.
Batters: Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal are all set to get picked in the squad and will play as opening batters in three T20Is against Sri Lanka. Rinku Singh, who has made a big name as a finisher, is almost a confirmed selection, but it will be interesting to see if Abhishek Sharma, who became the quickest Indian to score a century in T20Is, and Ruturaj Gaikwad get a chance or not.
Wicketkeepers: Rishabh Pant is India’s first-choice wicketkeeper-batter in T20Is and played in all eight matches of the T20 World Cup 2024. After getting a much-needed break, he will be back for the Sri Lanka T20Is. Sanju Samson, who scored fifty in the fifth T20I against Zimbabwe, is set to be picked as his deputy.
All-rounders: T20 World Cup champions Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, and Axar Patel will be back for Sri Lanka T20Is, and Washington Sundar is also likely to get a chance after winning the Player of the Series award against Zimbabwe.
Spinners: Kuldeep Yadav will be India’s first-choice spinner in the T20I series against Sri Lanka, and former world No. 1 T20I bowler Ravi Bishnoi is expected to get picked over Yuzvendra Chahal for the second spinner’s role.
Pacers: In the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh will lead India’s fast-bowling attack against Sri Lanka and will have Mohammed Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, and Avesh Khan for support.
India’s likely squad for the T20I series against Sri Lanka: Suryakumar Yadav (C), Hardik Pandya, Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant (WK), Sanju Samson, Rinku Singh, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Avesh Khan
