‘Players Going Home Before Turning Up for Country': Angry Simon Doull Says New Zealand 'Deserve' to Play T20 WC Qualifiers
Former fast bowler Simon Doull was heard lashing out at Kane Williamson & Co for their underwhelming performance in the ongoing tournament.

New Zealand suffered the shock of getting knocked out of T20 World Cup 2024 following the qualifications of hosts West Indies and Afghanistan from Group C. The Black Caps had a forgettable start to their campaign in the showpiece event where they lost to Afghanistan (by 84 runs) and then lost to the Windies in their encounter. On Saturday, they opened their account by crushing Uganda by 9 wickets which was nothing more than a consolation win.

During New Zealand’s fixture against Uganda, former fast bowler Simon Doull was heard lashing out at Kane Williamson & Co for their underwhelming performance in the ongoing tournament. New Zealand would have to participate in the Qualifiers to qualify for the next T20 World Cup 2026, scheduled to be held in India. Reacting to the fact, Doull, while calling the game, said the Kiwis deserve to be there.

“Actually, they deserve to [play T20 World Cup qualifirs]; came here not prepared, unprepared for the warm-up game. Players actually putting trips back home ahead of turning up for their country. Over the years, NZC very generous in allowing players to play franchise cricket all around the world, but they need to show the willingness to make decisions for the country as well,” Doull said.

New Zealand beat Uganda

New Zealand, whose exit from the tournament was confirmed by Afghanistan’s win over Papua New Guinea on Thursday, cruised to an easy win after restricting Uganda to a paltry 40 all out off 18.4 overs, with Tim Southee taking three wickets for four runs and Trent Boult 2-7.

The Black Caps then raced to their victory target in just 5.2 overs for the loss of only one wicket.

Devon Conway top-scored for the New Zealanders with an unbeaten 22 while Finn Allen went for nine runs.

New Zealand’s run chase was assisted by a wayward bowling performance from Uganda, who sent down six wides and a no-ball.
