Joe Root Needs 6 Runs To Overtake Yashasvi Jaiswal & Become Leading Run Scorer In WTC 2023-25
Root, who is the all-time leading run scorer in World Test Championship history, has scored 1023 runs in 13 matches played so far in the WTC 2023–25 cycle.

Joe Root is playing for England in the ongoing 1st Test against Sri Lanka, which got underway at Old Trafford in Manchester on Wednesday (August 21). After dismissing the Sri Lankans for 236 runs in the first inning, England finished the first day’s play at 22-0 in four overs. The England batters will look to come up with a big show on Day 2 and take a big lead over the Dhananjaya da Silva-led side.

During the second day’s play of the first Test, Root will have a chance to overtake star Indian batter Yashasvi Jaiswal and become the leading run scorer in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023–25 cycle. Root, who finished as the leading run scorer in the three-match Test series played between England and the West Indies last month, has 1023 runs to his name in 14 matches played so far.

On the other hand, Jaiswal, who will return to action for India next month during the two-match Test series against Bangladesh, has 1028 runs to his name in nine matches played so far in the WTC 2023–25 cycle.

Most runs in WTC 2023-25

If Root manages to score at least six runs in the first inning, then he will move past Jaiswal and take No. 1 position in the leading run scorers list.

Root and Jaiswal are the only two batters who have managed to score 1000 runs in the ongoing WTC cycle.

Root, who is the world No. 1 Test batter, has a chance to break multiple batting records during the ongoing three-match Test series between England and Sri Lanka. The former Test captain, who has 12,027 runs to his name in 143 Tests played so far, will become the leading run scorer for England in the five-day format of the game if he manages to score 446 runs.

At present, the record for scoring most Test runs for England is held by former captain Alastair Cook, who amassed a total of 12,472 runs in 161 matches played during his 12-year-long international career. In addition to that, Root will also have a chance to become the first batter in the world to score 5000 runs in the WTC.
