It's been 13 years since India won their second ICC ODI World Cup title, beating Sri Lanka in the summit clash.

The Indian cricket team etched their name in history books as they lifted the ODI World Cup trophy for the second time on this day in 2011. Led by MS Dhoni, the hosts got the better of Sri Lanka in the final match by six wickets to clinch the prized trophy at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Reminiscing the moment, the official Instagram handle of the Indian cricket team shared a picture of their players posing with the trophy at the Wankhede. The post also features Sachin Tendulkar taking a victory lap as Team India bask in the glory of the World Cup triumph in front of a jam-packed Wankhede.

“Throwback to a very special day! On This Day in 2011, Team India won the ODI World Cup for the second time,” read the post shared by the Indian cricket team.

Batting legend Sachin Tendulkar also shared how he realised his childhood dream.

Suresh Raina, a key architect of India’s 2011 World Cup triumph, walked down the memory lane to relive the epic win.

Raina penned an emotional note along with a few pictures of the jubilant Indian side celebrating the World Cup win.

“Still get goosebumps thinking about that historic moment in 2011 when we lifted the World Cup, Incredible memories with an amazing team,” the former Indian cricketer wrote on social media.

Five-time Indian Premier League winners Chennai Super Kings also recalled the 2011 win by sharing a heartfelt note on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

“A billion whistles still echoes to this day,” read the post shared by the reigning IPL champions.

Captained by Dhoni, the Indian cricket team put up some clinical performances to claim the World Cup trophy on home soil in 2011. In the final, the hosts faced an upbeat Sri Lankan side which comprised some big names like Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene and Lasith Malinga.

Batting first, Sri Lanka registered a challenging total of 274 runs losing six wickets. Jayawardene produced a sublime century. His terrific knock of unbeaten 103 helped the former champions to a good total.

For India, Zaheer Khan and Yuvraj Singh picked up two wickets each in the summit clash.

During the run chase, India lost their first two wickets in 6.1 overs scoring 31 runs. Gautam Gambhir and skipper MS Dhoni weathered the storm and scored a half-century each. While, Gambhir returned to the pavilion scoring 97, the-then India captain Dhoni remained unbeaten on 91.

It was Dhoni who hit the famous match-winning six to guide India to a memorable World Cup victory.
