Formula One Racer Oscar Piastri His Favourite IPL Team; It Has an Aussie Connection

Formula One racer Oscar Piastri has revealed himself as a Delhi Capitals supporter for the ongoing Indian Premier League 2024 season. The McClaren driver always had a close association with cricket since childhood.

Given his fandom for Aussie cricket great Ricky Ponting, Piastri’s choice is not that surprising. In an Instagram post, Piastri shared a picture of himself rocking the Delhi Capitals matchday kit with his shirt. The shirt had the number 81 and ‘Piastri’ printed. His post read, “Went with Delhi Capitals as my IPL T20 team – had to go with Ricky Ponting. Thanks for all the suggestions. Will be following along”.

Oscar Piastri grew up as a cricket fan, idolising his country’s greatest-ever captain Ricky Ponting. Piastri even once competed as a junior cricketer for Brighton Cricket Club and the West Bentleigh Cricket Club in Melbourne. Last year he had visited Australia’s cricket squad in England ahead of their second Test in the Ashes.

Cricket Australia even shared a video of the Formula One driver. In the video, he can be seen interacting with the Australian cricketer during a training session. He later zoomed into the nets to face Aussie bowlers including the likes of Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Starc.

Having decided upon his IPL journey as a fan, Oscar Piastri will now have his eyes set on the ongoing Formula One season. He recently finished in eighth place at the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai, right above Mercedes star Lewis Hamilton. He boasted a positive time of 56.198 seconds, acquiring four points from the race. Piastri will now be focused on the Miami Grand Prix that is scheduled to take place next month at the Miami International Autodrome.

As for the Delhi Capitals, the Rishabh Pant-led side will continue their fight for a playoff spot in the IPL 2024. They are currently placed sixth on the IPL 2024 points table with four wins from nine games. Delhi Capitals recently got the better of Gujarat Titans at the Arun Jaitley Stadium by four runs on April 24.

Pant played a phenomenal innings in that clash, smashing an unbeaten 43-ball 88 while also securing the Player of the Match award. Delhi Capitals will next face the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2024. The match will take place on Saturday, April 27 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
