The sentiments over Pakistan’s humiliating exit from the T20 World Cup 2024 echoed in the country’s parliament on Saturday. Member of Pakistan National Assembly, Abdul Qadir Patel expressed his disappointment over the cricket team’s debacle in the showpiece event in the West, trolling skipper Babar Azam in the assembly. He further took a dig at the Pakistan cricket team captain, drawing parallels with former captain and prime minister Imran Khan and his involvement in the ‘Missing Cypher’ case that led to a 10-year imprisonment.

While speaking in the assembly, Patel raised the point of Pakistan’s back-to-back losses against the USA and India that set the ground for their elimination. He further insisted the team get united for the sake of the country and its poor citizens.

“Ye cricket team ko kya hua hai (What’s wrong with our cricket team?). They lost to America (USA), they lost to India. Babar Azam should take a lesson from one of his senior cricketers [Hinting at former cricket team captain and Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan] and throw a party after losing where he should wave some documents in public stating, ‘There’s been a conspiracy against me’,” Patel said.

“And when PCB asks him what’s written on that paper, he would say, ‘It’s no more with me. I lost it.”

What Did Patel Mean by ‘Waving the Document in Public’?

Back in 2022, Imran Khan waved a document at a rally, days before his ouster as Prime Minister, saying it was proof of foreign conspiracy. Last year, in August 2023, admitted misplacing the documents as he was interrogated by Pakistan’s top investigative agency at the Attock Jail in a case filed under the Official Secrets Act for wrongful use of the classified document.

As reported by The Dawn, Khan admitted to losing the cypher during interrogation, saying he couldn’t recall where he kept it.

Citing the cypher, Khan has been alleging the U.S. of hatching a conspiracy to topple his government. The U.S. has time and again denied such allegations, terming them ‘categorically false’.
