Mohammad Shami’s hilarious response to starting World Cup 2023 on the bench left Rohit Sharma and Rahul David rolling on the floor. Shami recently attended the CEAT Cricket Awards held last month. Days after the event’s conclusion, a video of a hilarious exchange between Shami and the show host was shared on X (formerly Twitter).
The host asked Shami about what drove him to keep pushing forward as he dealt with being a second-choice bowler at the World Cup. Shami hilariously responded, “(Aadat pad gayi shayad) Maybe I’m used to it now.” Shami’s words led to Rohit cracking up while lowering his head. Former Team India head coach Rahul Dravid was also left in smiles.

In the video, Mohammad Shami looked all suited up for the CEAT Cricket Awards 2024 ceremony. He was rolling with a black outfit that was complimented by a white blazer on top. Rocking his shiny outfit, Shami also spoke about how he had endured a similar start in all three previous editions of the ODI World Cups. “In 2015, 2019, and 2023, I had the same start. When I was given a chance, the performances, thanks to god, they never thought of dropping me again,” he said.

Speaking further, Mohammad Shami jokingly talked about how he would only be able to perform for the national side if he got a chance. “You can call to hard work, but I’m always ready for a chance. Only when you’re ready can you prove yourself. Otherwise, I can only run to the field to give water! It’s better to seize the opportunity when you get it,” he said.
Mohammad Shami stole the show at the 2023 World Cup, emerging as the tournament’s most successful bowler. He bagged 24 wickets in seven games at the competition. But Shami started on the bench for India’s first four matches against Australia, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh. He got his first opportunity to make an impact against New Zealand in Dharamshala. He registered a five-wicket haul to kick off his start in style. Shami racked up four wickets against England in their next match followed by more success.

But Mohammad Shami’s leading performance came in the tournament’s semi-final where India faced New Zealand once again. Playing at the Wankhede Stadium, Shami claimed seven wickets to seal the hosts’ place in the final. Recognising his contributions and performances in the Indian shirt last year, Shami was honoured with the Best ODI Bowler of the Year at the CEAT Cricket Awards 2024.
