The 11-day Dasara celebrations ended with the grand Surasamharam event, signifying the victory of good over evil, at the famous Mutharamman Temple in Palayamkottai in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. The Dasara festival started on the morning of October 14 with a flag-hoisting ceremony at Sharadambal temple in Palayamkottai.
Several devotees from different areas gathered at the temple early in the morning. Chanting slogans like Jai Kali, Om Kali, Thaye Mutharamma, they later headed to the beach in the evening to witness the Surasamharam at the temple.
Subsequently, abhishekam rituals and decorative lighting graced the Sharadambal temple. During the celebrations, the Amman Chapparam Bhavani procession visited 11 Amman temples, providing devotees with the opportunity to seek blessings at Rama Temple, Rajagopalaswamy Temple and Lord Shiva Temples.
The Chapparam then proceeded to these temples. Starting on October 15, the Amman Kolu festival commenced during Navratri, with the goddess wearing a different outfit each day.
On October 24, which marked Vijayadashami and the 10th day of the Dussehra festival, the day began with special morning worship at 11 goddess temples, including Thoothuvari Amman Mutharamman. In the evening, a grand procession took place, followed by visits to Ayrathampal Temple and Lord Shiva Temple via Ratha Streets, Chapbarangal Bazar Ram Temple and Thital Rajagopala Swamy Thital, where devotees paused to seek blessings.
In the evening, the Chapparas travelled to Palai Market Road, allowing devotees to seek darshan. At midnight, the 11 Amman Chapparam Palai assembled at Erumaikida Maidan to perform Surasamharam, symbolising Ayratambal’s victory over Mahishasura.
Thousands of devotees offered betel leaves, various fruits and coconuts, signifying their devotion. Following this, yesterday night, the Mariamman Temple witnessed the Surasamharam event, symbolising the victory of Mahishasura, as per tradition.
During the Palayangottai Dussehra festival, the Ambal Avartatriuli Mahisha Surasamkaram was performed in the Sapparam, which is decorated with lights from all the 12 goddess temples in the Palayangottai area.
