Vegetarian Thali Price Rises 10% YoY in June 2024 On Costlier Tomatoes, Potatoes and Onions
Vegetarian Thali Price Rises 10% YoY in June 2024 On Costlier Tomatoes, Potatoes and Onions
The cost of a vegetable thali, which comprises roti, vegetables (onions, tomatoes and potatoes), rice, dal, curd and salad, increased to Rs 29.4 per plate in June 2024 from Rs 26.7 in June 2023, says a Crisil report.

A vegetarian thali became costlier by 10 per cent year-on-year (YoY) in June 2024 mainly on account of dearer tomatoes, potatoes and onions as adverse weather conditions have impacted their supply and due to low base effect. However, the cost of non-veg thali in June 2024 fell 4 per cent YoY due to a fall in broiler prices, according to the monthly ‘Roti Rice Rate’ report released by Crisil’s ‘Market Intelligence and Analysis’ on Friday.

The Cost Of A Veg Thali

The cost of a vegetable thali, which comprises roti, vegetables (onions, tomatoes and potatoes), rice, dal, curd and salad, increased to Rs 29.4 per plate in June 2024 from Rs 26.7 in June 2023, the Crisil report said.

“The cost of the veg thali increased due to a surge of 30 per cent, 46 per cent and 59 per cent on-year in prices of tomato, onion and potato (TOP), respectively, largely due to low base of last fiscal,” it said.

The report said lower onion arrivals on account of a significant drop in rabi acreage coupled with a decline in yield for potato crop due to unseasonal rainfall in March, and virus infestation in tomato summer

crop due to high temperatures in key growing regions of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh that tamped tomato arrivals down 35 per cent on-year.

Rice and pulses have also got costlier by 13 per cent and 22 per cent, respectively, it added.

On a monthly basis, the cost of a veg thali increased 6 per cent due to a 29 per cent increase in tomato prices, apart from 9 per cent rise in potato and 15 per cent onion.

The Cost Of A Non-Veg Thali

In the case of non-veg thali, which comprises all the same ingredients but dal gets replaced by chicken, the price declined to Rs 58 in June 2024 as compared with Rs 60.5 a year ago.

The decline in non-veg thali on a yearly basis was due to a 14 per cent on-year fall in broiler prices, which has a 50 per cent weightage in the overall thali price.

On a monthly basis, the cost of a non-veg thali, however, rose due to elevated vegetable prices, but an estimated 1 per cent on-month increase in the cost of broiler.

The average cost of preparing a thali at home is calculated based on input prices prevailing in north, south, east and west India. The monthly change reflects the impact on the common man’s expenditure. The data also reveals the ingredients (cereals, pulses, broilers, vegetables, spices, edible oil and cooking gas) driving the change in the cost of the thali.
