Mumbai: The markets ended on a new high on the back of heavy buying seen in scrips across sectors on Wednesday. The Sensex breached 14,600 levels, up 164.94 points or 1.14 per cent at 14643.13 and the Nifty ended 28.35 points or 0.68 per cent up at 4224.25.
About 1303 shares advanced, 1333 shares declined while 39 shares remained unchanged. The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 7,697.81, up 0.5 per cent. The BSE Midcap Index closed flat at 6,186.86.
Among the major gainers were Bajaj Auto Up 9.5 per cent with volumes 10 times more than average; SAIL at 52-week high with volumes five times more than average and Infosys up 4 per cent with volumes three times more than average.
The BSE Bankex was up 1.4 per cent at 7,527.05. ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Allahabad Bank, UTI Bank, Canara Bank too moved upwards. The BSE IT Index gained 2.2 per cent at 5,524.22. Hexaware Tech, Infosys, HCL Tech, HCL Info, Wipro all advanced.
The BSE Metal Index was up 1.5 per cent to close at 9,426.33. SAIL, Hindalco, Sterlite Ind, Jindal Saw ended higher. The BSE Capital Goods Index was up 1 per cent at 10,055.24. Bharat Elec, BEML, L&T, HEG, Siemens closed higher.
The BSE Health Care Index closed was up 0.7 per cent at 3,907.50. Glenmark, Pfizer, Lupin, Cipla, Wyeth closed higher. The BSE Auto Index closed at 5,809.35 up 1.5 per cent. Punj Tractors, Bajaj Auto, Hind Motors, Exide Industrie, Asahi India moved higher.
The BSE FMCG Index lost 0.2 per cent at 1,914.24. Nirma, P&G, Dabur India, Colgate closed in green. The BSE Oil and Gas Index lost 0.3 per cent to close at 6,687.30. Reliance ended in green.
The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 10318.57 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 27831.79 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 5340.63 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 43490.99 crore.
