New Delhi: The markets had a fairly volatile session with alternate bouts of buying and selling at the bourses.
The Sensex managed to close at a new high of 12,347.63, up 36.91 or 0.30 per cent after witnessing a choppy trade in the afternoon. It hit a life high of 12,482.91.
The Nifty ended at a new high of 3648.40, up 14.15 points or 0.39 per cent. It touched an all-time high of 3674.50.
The CNX Midcap also closed at 5241, up 24.1 points or 0.46 per cent. It also recorded a life high of 5265.15.
The BSE Small Cap Index ended marginally down 1.19 points at 7,516.56. The BSE Midcap closed at 5,930.72, down 0.67 point.
The market breadth was positive, about 1302 shares advanced, 1203 shares declined, and 63 shares remained unchanged.

The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 10524.42 crore. The NSE F&O turnover registered at Rs 37338.48 crore.
The Nifty Futures discount widened to 26 points. It added 7.7 lakh shares in Open Interest. Reliance, Reliance Capital, Tata Steel, India Cements, Gujarat Ambuja, Century Tex and ACC were the top trades in the NSE F&O segment.
The BSE cash turnover was at Rs 5193.24 crore. The total market turnover recorded at Rs 53056.14 crore.
Citigroup has been underweight on India for a while even though earnings have been impressive.
Reliance Industries recorded a total turnover of Rs 7122 crore. It registered a turnover of Rs 5092 crore in the NSE F&O segment. Its NSE and BSE cash market turnover was at Rs 1540 crore and Rs 490 crore respectively.
Reliance, Tata Power, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Infosys, BPCL, HPCL, M&M were among the major gainers on the indices.
Stocks including Guj Ambuja Cements, Hindalco, NTPC, L&T, Tata Steel, Zee and Nalco were among the laggards on the indices.
