Chandigarh: Tata Motors is working towards launching the Rs one lakh common man's car in the first half of 2008, a senior executive of the company said on Thursday.
Regional Manager (North) Anupam Singh said that the company is determined to fulfill the promise made by the Chairman.
He added that the company was trying to come out with petrol and diesel variants of the car.
"As part of the ongoing upgradation we will also continue to launch better variants of the existing models of various models, including Safari range, Indigo, Indigo Marina, Indica V2 and Sumo range," he added.
He said that the company was also setting up a car manufacturing plant in Uttaranchal which was expected to go into production by March next year. The plant is being set up with an annual capacity for manufacture of 30,000 vehicles, he said adding that as of now there are no plans to enter Punjab.
Singh said that the sale of Safari model had seen an increase of 250 per cent in some states after its price was reduced and made attractive in July this year.
He said that the company has seen a 24 per cent increase in car sales in the first six months of the current financial year.
The cumulative sales of cars in domestic market has been 1,04,294 numbers as compared with 1,89,070 units last year, Singh added.
He said that the Tata Motors passenger vehicles continued to be the highest selling in their respective segments - the Indica in Rs 3-5 lakh hatchback segment for the second year running, the Indigo in the entry midsize sedan segment for three years running, the Indigo Marino in the estate segment for two years running and the Safari in the premium SUV segment.
The Indica also continued to be the second largest selling car in the industry for the second year running, Singh added.
With close to four million Tata vehicles plying in India, it is the leader in commercial vehicles and the second largest in passenger vehicles, he said.
Singh said that Tata cars, buses and trucks are being marketed in several countries in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, and South East Asia and in Australia.
He said that the company expects an increase of about 25 to 30 per cent in sales in Chandigarh following the appointment of a second dealer Joshi AutoZone. This will be the 43rd sales outlet in North India and 142nd car dealership in the country, he added.
