Mkts choppy, Sensex ends 118 pts down
The market has opened in negative mode with the Sensex down over 50 points. Infosys, Jet Airways, HDFC and HLL are down on profit booking.

New Delhi: The market ended in red on profit booking. The Sensex closed down 118.50 points. Capital goods, banking, pharma, FMCG, technology, metal and auto were the main draggers. Cipla, Grasim, ICICI Bank, BHEL, ABB, VSNL and Nalco were the top losers.

The market ended in red on profit booking. The Sensex closed down 118.50 points or 1.04 per cent at 11,237.23. It touched an intraday high of 11,380.83 and an intraday low of 11,008.43.

This is the first weekly loss for Sensex after seven-week of gains.

The Nifty ended down 34.50 points or 1.02 per cent at 3345.50. It touched an intraday high of 3391.05 and an intraday low of 3290.35.

The CNX Midcap closed at 4763.70, down 109.50 points or 2.25 per cent. It touched an intraday high of 4881.95 and an intraday high of 4676.50.

The BSE Small Cap Index ended at 6,738.59, down 163.17 points or 2.36 per cent. The BSE Midcap Index closed down 103.36 points or 1.89 per cent at 5,370.60.

The market breadth was negative, about 639 shares advanced, 1819 shares declined, and 44 shares remained unchanged.

The market is going to correct further and it should stabilize around 10,500–11,000, said experts.

The total market turnover recorded at Rs 65295.82 crore. The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 11509.09 crore. The NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 47976.16 crore.

The BSE cash turnover was at Rs 5810.57 crore. Index futures recorded a new high of Rs 17236 crore. The Index options also recorded a new high of Rs 4528 crore.

Cipla, Grasim, ICICI Bank, Satyam, BHEL, ABB, VSNL and Nalco were the biggest losers on the indices.

Maruti Udyog, Dr Reddy's Labs, Reliance, Tata Steel, NTPC and Gail were the biggest gainers on the indices.

Experts say that the markets have taken severe beating and this may actually provide a good opportunity to buy a few stocks for the longer term.

Capital goods stocks like ABB, Bharat Electronics, Alstom Projects, KEC Infrastructures, Siemens, Gammon India, HEG, L&T and SKF India were down on profit booking. The BSE Capital Goods Index closed at 8,290.46, down 2.80 per cent or 238.77 points.

Banking stocks including UTI Bank, Canara Bank, ICICI Bank, IOB, SBI, Kotak Mahindra and Allahabad Bank also lost ground. The BSE Bankex closed down 2.30 per cent or 120.09 points at 5,107.51.

The BSE Healthcare Index ended at 3,822.97, down 1.66 per cent amid selling in Glenmark, Nicholas Piramal, FDC, Cipla, Divis Labs, Lupin, Aventis Pharma and Aurobindo Pharma.

FMCG stocks like Nestle, Colgate, Shaw Wallace, Tata Tea, McDowell, Britannia, Nirma and ITC also plummeted. The BSE FMCG Index closed down 1.65 per cent at 2,170.23.

Technology stocks including i-flex Solutions, HCL Info, Satyam, Infosys and HCL Tech also tumbled. The BSE IT Index ended at 3,896.32, down 1.64 per cent.

The BSE Consumer Durables Index closed down 1.39 per cent at 3,182.42 as losses were seen in Mirc Electronic, Su-Raj Diamonds, Samtel Color, BPL and Blue Star.

Metal stocks like Guj NRE Coke, Sterlite Ind, Nalco, Sesa Goa, Jindal Steel, Sail and Hind Zinc also slumped. The BSE Metal Index closed down 0.97 per cent at 9,407.34.

Auto stocks including Cummins, TVS Motor, MRF, Ashok Leyland, Sundram, Escorts, Bharat Forge and Apollo Tyres also skidded. The BSE Auto Index ended at 5,231.76, down 0.78 per cent.

However, oil stocks like Reliance and Gail ended higher. The BSE Oil & Gas Index closed up 0.63 per cen at 5,033.31.
