Markets end higher on buying spree
The market ended higher amid strong fund based buying in frontline stocks. The Sensex, Nifty and CNX Midcap Index closed at new lifetime high.

Mumbai: The market ended higher amid strong fund based buying in frontline stocks. The Sensex, Nifty and CNX Midcap Index closed at new lifetime high.

The Sensex closed up 77.02 points or 0.71% at 10878.74. It touched an intraday high of 10889.25 and an intraday low of 10830.19.

The Nifty closed up 31.25 points or 0.98% at 3226.60. It touched an all-time high of 3230.40.

The CNX Midcap Index closed up 17.90 points or 0.39% at 4648.90. It touched an intraday high of 4675.35 and an intraday low of 4636.

The market breadth was negative, about 1039 shares advanced, 1439 shares declined, and 78 shares remained unchanged. The total market turnover today was at Rs 41,489.82 crore (Rs 414.89 billion).

Zee, Reliance, Dabur India, VSNL, Tata Motors, Tata Power and Tata Steel were the biggest index gainers.

Nalco, Ranbaxy Labs, Larsen, ITC and NTPC were the biggest index losers.

The BSE Oil & Gas Index outperformed the other indices. It closed up 1.86% at 4652.46 amid gains in Reliance, Gail, BPCl, ONGC, Kochi Refineries and HPCL

Metal stocks like Sesa Goa, Hindustan Zinc, Gujarat NRE Coke, Tata Steel, Sterlite Industries and Sail also ended in the green. The BSE Metal Index closed up 1.55% at 7647.25.
