Global Tablet Market Shows Signs of Recovery In Q1 2024 After Two-Year Slump: IDC Report
Apple and Samsung remained the leaders in the global tablet market, with a combined market share of more than 50 per cent.

The global tablet market saw a marginal recovery in the first quarter of 2024 (Q12024) after two years of decline, according to a report by International Data Corporation (IDC).

The IDC report released on May 3 showed that total tablet shipments by leading manufacturers in Q12024 stood at 30.8 million units, up 0.5 per cent year-on-year.

The rise in shipments of tablets globally indicates the first upward trend since the market started to slow down as a result of saturation in the second quarter of 2021. After a steep drop, tablet shipments in 2023 had reached a 12-year low.

This quarter’s increase in shipments can be linked to the beginning of a recovery cycle, despite ongoing global uncertainties.

As per an IDC report, the number of tablets shipped globally in Q1 2024 increased to 30.8 million from 30.6 million in Q1 2023. This is the first growth in tablet shipments in any quarter since Q1 2021.

Due to the state of the economy and a dearth of new models, Apple, which held the top spot with 9.9 million units shipped, had an 8.5 per cent year-over-year fall. On the other hand, second leading tablet maker Samsung saw a 5.8 per cent fall in shipments, due to high advertising cost and a lack of new products.

Huawei, which is probably profiting from the revival of its smartphone industry, managed to hold third place and expand by 43.6 per cent YoY in terms of total shipment.

The shift towards high-end tablets as users look for devices that focus on productivity is a positive development for the tablet market, despite its hardships. As people search for gadgets that may meet their demands for both work and play, this trend may boost the market.

The benefits will come from the upcoming recovery cycle, according to Anuroopa Nataraj, Senior Research Analyst for Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers at IDC. Growth in the commercial segments will also be seen as a result of more tablets being utilised in education and small businesses, according to Nataraj.
