Alphabet Inc. has chosen local contract producer Dixon Technologies to build its uber-premium Google Pixel 8 smartphones in India, according to a report in the Economic Times.
The initial batch of these gadgets, which are built in India, should be accessible by September since the trial manufacturing phase has started.
According to the report, the first shipment of these made-in-India gadgets could be ready by September. Google aims to use Indian production to fulfil domestic market demands as well as prospective exports, according to sources.
Citing sources, the report also said that Google had been in negotiations with over a year’s worth of possible manufacturing partners prior to settling on Dixon Technologies.
This latest development follows Alphabet’s announcement in October of last year that Google Pixel smartphones will be made in India. It is the sole major international smartphone brand that was absent among Make in India smartphone drives.
Meanwhile, the sources further told the Economic Times that Dixon is aiming to capture a larger portion of the smartphone market in India, which is the second largest market globally, by increasing its Pixel production to 100,000 devices per month, with 25–30% allocated for export.
In India, over 80% of Pixels sold are the Pixel 8 variant, according to executives.
According to the executives the news agency cited, Alphabet intends to gradually increase production in India, much like Apple.
As per them, Dixon may produce both existing and future Pixel models in the country. It was stated that Alphabet could possibly take into account a second manufacturing partner in India.
Reportedly, Google and Foxconn have been in discussions about producing Pixel smartphones in India. Furthermore, Google is making this move in an attempt to take over a larger portion of the Indian market since it has been unable to do so in previous attempts.
According to analysts, in the Rs 50,000-plus price range, people choose Apple’s iPhones or Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones. Currently, almost every model of the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, along with previous Apple smartphones marketed in India, is made locally, as are Samsung’s high-end variants.
