'Now You Are Not Going to Bowl for Some Time:' Shreyas Iyer Reveals Sad Reason Why He Cannot Pursue His Bowling Desires

Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer has expressed that he wants to bowl for India again at the highest level. Iyer had played an important role in India’s 4-1 victory over Australia in their five-match T20I series.

After the fifth game of the series, Iyer gave an interview to Jio Cinema where he spoke about the youngsters and his desire to bowl again. However, he explained that his coaches have forbidden him to do so because of his recent back surgery. “I have been longing to bowl, but the strength and conditioning coaches, they are right ‘Now you are not going to bowl for some time’. That’s the sad part of it”, Shreyas said as per several media outlets.

Shreyas Iyer’s injury flared up once the fourth Border-Gavaskar Test against Australia came to an end in March. As per ESPNCricinfo Shreyas told BCCI, “I had this issue for a while, but I was taking injections and going through various routes to see to it…but it reached a saturation point where I realised that ‘okay, now I have to get a surgery’.” He had opened up about this situation a few months back, expressing the panic that slowly crept in but he was eventually grateful for his fast recovery and being able to represent the national squad once again.

Not widely known for his bowling skills, Shreyas Iyer has only bowled a total of 7.3 overs in international cricket. In those spells, he has given away a total of 43 runs. He has yet to pick up a scalp for India on the international level. In first-class, List A and T20 cricket, however, Iyer has accumulated a total of 10 wickets.

Speaking of his batting, Iyer produced a decisive knock in the fifth T20I for India against Australia. He smashed 53 runs in just 37 balls while hitting five boundaries and two maximums. His knock helped India put up 160 runs on the board while losing eight wickets.

In the second half, the bowlers stepped up massively for India and curbed Australia at 154 for eight. This led to a six-run win for India taking Iyer’s tally to 65 runs in three games and an average of 21.67 in the series.

India will next be playing South Africa in an upcoming tour. They will be competing in the three major formats away from home. Shreyas Iyer is one of the few players who will be featuring in all the said formats for the Men in Blue. He will excited to continue his good form against the cricket giants. The tour will begin with T20Is starting from December 10.
