The highly acclaimed biopic based on the life of Sri Lankan cricket icon Muttiah Muralitharan is all set for its digital premiere after its successful theatrical release on October 6. The film, 800 features the Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire actor Madhurr Mittal portraying the role of the legendary Sri Lankan spinner.
The film will be premiering on December 2, Friday in various languages including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Bengali and Kannada on Jio Cinema.
The film narrates the remarkable journey of Sri Lankan wicket-taker Muttiah Muralitharan from being an oppressed Tamilian to becoming an iconic figure not only in Sri Lanka but in cricket’s history. Notably, Muralitharan’s incredible feat of being the only cricketer to take 800 test wickets has been an inspirational journey for sports aficionados.
800 navigates through the complexities of nationality, humanity and the challenges Muralitharan faced. The film also offers a captivating cinematic experience, chronicling his evolution from his early days to his status as a cricket legend.
Madhur Mittal on the OTT release shared his excitement and said “I am very excited about the movie’s release on JioCinema and hope it encourages people to follow their aspirations.” He also mentioned that he always has been an ardent fan of cricket and growing up he remembers watching some of the most thrilling games by the legend. And getting an opportunity to portray him on screen is truly an honour. He further said that he was also extremely nervous about how he would replicate his style and mannerisms but after meeting Muralitharan he was in awe of how the latter eased things for me and encouraged him to be authentic.
With Madhur Mittal in the lead role, the 800 star cast includes Mahima Nambiar, Narai, Nassar and Aruldoss in the pivotal roles. The film has been directed by MS Sripathy and produced by Vivek Rangachari.
