Harinakshi, a single mother of two, chose coconut dehusking as her means to earn a livelihood. Her resilience and determination to provide a better future for her kids is quite an endearing story. Harinakshi currently resides in Vaninagar in Kasaragod, Kerala and dehusks around 1,000 coconuts per day. She earns Re 1 for dehusking a coconut from houses and farms of Kasaragod, through a coconut merchant in Puttur. Reportedly, she shifted to Kasaragod a couple of years back. As a single mother of two kids, she needed to find an income to support her family.
As per reports, she is a trained Ayurvedic Therapist in Udikku and has previously worked in Bengaluru and Chennai. However, due to personal reasons, she had to relocate to Kasaragod but did not find any reliable source of income in her field. Hence, she took up odd jobs and even worked as a labourer and domestic help, with which she could only earn a modest income.
It was while working at home in Kasaragod that she quickly learned the skill of coconut dehusking. Luck had something different in store for her. Soon after, she was introduced to a coconut merchant in Puttur, who instantly connected her with work on farms and households.
As per the reports, Harinakshi has an 11-year-old daughter and a nine-year-old son. Apart from dehusking, she also takes care of a cow. In an interview, she revealed that at a very tender age, she lost her parents. She has also faced many challenges in her life but has never given up. “I can dehusk 1,000 coconuts each day and work at a rate of an average of 100 coconuts per hour”, she said in a media report.
In her free time, Harinakshi also dehusks areca nuts and harvests pepper. In a male-dominated field, Harinakshi has created a niche for herself with her willpower and efforts.
