Skoda Auto, the Czech carmaker, declared that in 2023 they had produced over 8.88 lakh vehicles.
Of these, 52,000 were made in India. In addition, 48,000 units were created locally in the Pune facility for the Kushaq and Slavia models, and 4,400 units were made at the Aurangabad plant for the Superb, Octavia, and Kodiaq models.
This means that the carmaker’s operations in India create 5.85 percent of its total output worldwide, according to Financial Express.
Earlier, in the context of announcing the 2022 annual results, Skoda Auto CEO Klaus Zellmer said that the company would use Vietnam as a springboard to enter the ASEAN region, with India serving as the brand’s export hub from there. After which in September 2023, Skoda Auto began operating in Vietnam.
In addition to growing its global market presence, Skoda Auto is seeking to attract more customers in India. The company announced during the most recent press conference that the completely knocked down (CKD) kits are scheduled to be shipped from Pune to Vietnam, as per Hindustan Times (HT) Auto.
The company also stated that Škoda Auto strategically leads the Brand Group Core in Vietnam intending to maximise growth for the Volkswagen Group, which is a part of the ASEAN region, reports add.
In October 2023, Skoda Auto opened a new Parts Expedition Centre (PEC) in Pune. Beginning in 2024, this will serve as a logistics hub for Kushaq and Slavia CKD kits manufactured in India.
Furthermore, the Indian Parts Expedition Centre made history in December 2023 by becoming the first building in India to receive the Indian Green Building Council’s platinum certification for green building. The certification recognises the facility’s commitment to green building principles, which include water conservation, energy efficiency, natural resource preservation, waste reduction, and the creation of healthier workplace environments.
The Parts Expedition Centre which is located in Pune and spans 16,800 square metres, will be utilised to improve the company’s export activities throughout the ASEAN area. For final production, the PEC will ship kits made in India to Vietnam.
In October 2023, Skoda Auto not only re-entered the Vietnamese market but also marked another milestone in its internationalisation efforts by returning to Kazakhstan, thereby advancing the company’s objective of augmenting its worldwide reach.
On the other hand, the company sold 48,755 units in 2023, following a record-breaking 53,721 cars sold in 2022.
