The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) has initiated the expansion of the Pune Metro with the development of the extended underground stretch from Swargate to Katraj.
As reported by Hindustan Times, Maha-Metro is set to enlist a design consultant for the architectural and tunnel ventilation systems for this underground section.
To facilitate the design process for the metro stations and tunnels, Maha-Metro has released a tender, dated December 12 of the last year. A pre-bidding meeting is scheduled for January 27, 2024, at the Shivajinagar metro office.
The tender is for the appointment of a design consultant to complete the detailed design of the architectural and tunnel ventilation system (TVS), including station and tunnel simulation, environmental control system (ECS), building management system (BMS), and checking of the Swargate to Katraj stretch. The expanded underground stretch of the Pune Metro from Swargate to Katraj will benefit residents of Gul Tekdi, Market Yard, Padmavati, Dhankawadi, Balaji Nagar, Sainath Nagar, Bibwewadi, Katraj, and Ambegaon.
In September 2021, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) approved the 5.4-kilometer underground metro extension from Swargate to Katraj. Subsequently, the proposal was communicated to the state government for approval in April 2022, following which it was forwarded to the central government. Notably, the stretch between Padmavati and Katraj currently lacks a station, prompting local representatives to advocate for the construction of a second metro station in proximity to Bharati Vidyapeeth or Balaji Nagar.
“At present, the proposal is with the Public Investment Board (PIB). The meeting is scheduled for this month. We are expecting final approval from the central government,” Atul Gadgil, Director (works) of Maha-Metro said as quoted by Hindustan Times.
We have completed all of the necessary tender work in advance so that we can begin the extension work immediately after receiving approval from the central government, Atul Gadgil, Director (works) of Maha-Metro added. He further mentioned that they have currently issued a tender for the appointment of a consultant for the design and cost of four metro stations and tunnels. Following this tender, they will release another tender for the construction of metro stations and tunnels.
Depending on central government approval, the project is expected to be completed by April 2027. For the corridor, the Maha-Metro has prepared a detailed project report. The total cost of the project is Rs 3,668 crore, with the state government contributing Rs 891 crore, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) contributing Rs 655 crore, and the state seeking Rs 300 crore from the Centre. In addition, soft loans will be used to secure Rs 1,803 crore for the Maha Metro.
